Yevgeniya S. Baras was born in Samara, Russia. She received
her BA and MS in social psychology and fine arts from the
University of Pennsylvania and her MFA from the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago. Narrative is central to her work:
both to her thinking about a painting beforehand and during
the process of making it. She is interested in the sacred within
the secular and explores modern Jewish culture and identity.
Though these concepts are critical to her work, the paintings
are extremely process-oriented and much of the thinking
happens in the course of making. Using various materials
including oils, spray paint, acrylic, and resin, she constructs
an experience that is physical and ultimately of the body.
